History of Petersburg

Petersburg is a small town with a relatively short history. A Norweigan, Peter Buschman, arrived in
the town in 1890, when he decided to locate his fishing endevour here. He founded the town in 1897. He realized that with
the LeConte Glacier being so close, it would be easy for him to get ice to pack the fish that
would be caught. He built a cannery in 1899, and soon more and more fisherman and Norweigans ventured to
the small community. Twenty years after Buschmann's arrival, the city of Petersburg was incorperated
The little city grew and matured, but it has never lost its Norweigan flavor. A good portion of
the population is either Norweigan, or decended from a Norweigan. Fishing has continued to be the
major industry for the town ever since Peter Buschmann arrived, and will continue until the city dies.
