Alaska's Little Norway
Overview of Petersburg
Petersburg, located in the heart of Southeast Alaska, is a small fishing
town of 3200 people. Founded on the fishing of Halibut, Salmon, Herring, crab,
and shrimp, the fishing industry is readily visible and the prominent industry
for the town. Although the industry has slacked a bit, logging has strong roots in the town as well.
With over 40,000 tourists per year, the tourism industry is quickly becoming one of the larger
industies, second only to fishing.
The spring and summer is the prime time for residents and visitors alike to
be seen doing their favorite pastimes. In early May is a celebration named May Fest,
which is a Norweigan celebration equal to our July Fourth. The downtown area is closed
off for the weekend, and people crowd the area enjoying fine local foods, and entertainment.
Vikings can be seen roaming and pilaging throughout the weekend, and the cities very own
viking ship can be seen rolling down the street in the impressive parade through main street.
On the weekend of July fourth, the citizens once again show the amazing ability for
a small town to pull together. The town folk throw out the stops and create a panarama of
fun and food to amaze even visitors from the biggest cities. Almost the whole town stops
to celebrate our countries freedom, and to show visitors the hospitality of a small town.
The celebration is ended with a respectable fireworks display that can only be done by
donations from local businesses and citizens.
