Southeast Wildlife
Magnificent animals grace Southeast Alaska. Moose, bear, eagles, seals, mountain goats,
and deer can all be seen on or around our island.

Marine Life

The Frederick Sound area just north of Petersburg is a summer feeding frenzy for Humpback
Whales. These monsters of the sea can be seen breaching and smacking their giant tales against the area water.
. From the air you can observe these mammoth beasts from a bird's eye view without them ever knowing you
are there, or From town there is a variety of guide boats that will take you to see the whales from water level.

Eighteen miles south of town, and accessible by road is the Crystal Lake Salmon Hatchery. Here you can see the
whole spawning process; from King Salmon running up the creek to egg extraction, to seeing hatchlings growing, to
larger salmon ready to be released.

Aerial Life

Just glance upward and you'll see something. Bald Eagles hover over many beaches and coastal
trees. Diving down gracefully, they snatch fish from the water and bring their spoil back to land.
From here, a dozen eagles will attempt to get the food until it is gone and another fish has
been caught.

Canada Geese nest and feed in the area and can be seen flying along nearby.

Trumpeter Swans use the area just south of town as a wintering area, and can be
photographed from a public viewing area. The wintering grounds are accessible by road
and a wooden boardwalk leads to the viewing area, which is kept up by the US Forest Service.

Land Life

The forests, muskegs, and mountains are home to so many different types of wildlife, that
it would be impossible to list them all here. Anywhere you go you will see some creatures
wandering and looking for food.

Bears are one of the most widely sought after creatures, and can be seen on most tidal
areas grazing on the green grass. When the salmon start running into the streams, the bears will
move in to feed.

Deer are almost as plentiful as people. Anywhere you go there will be a
deer staring at you, Even in town.

Moose can be seen south of town, and do not wander into town often. On glacier tours, moose
can be seen quite often on the mud flats of the Stikine River.
